The Net Zero Architect of the Year shortlist for BD’s Architect of the Year Awards.

AHR – Last year, the practice successfully delivered the £100 million Woodmill and St Columba’s RC High School in Dunfermline — the UK’s largest Passivhaus-certified educational facility and a flagship pilot for the Net Zero Carbon Building Standard.

Harrison Stringfellow Architects – The submission features three locally focused projects: The Changing Rooms, a retrofit initiative for a wellbeing-focused social enterprise; the refurbishment of the Bronte Youth Centre; and The Flint, a transformation of a former repair garage into a contemporary workplace. It is complemented by The Fahan, a new-build Passivhaus currently underway in Donegal, designed to embody circular economy principles.

HLM Architects – Keele Innovation Centre 7 is a net zero carbon facility in operation, directly linked to Keele University’s solar and wind energy farm. The £10.4 million development has been designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Studio Bark – The practice has developed U-Build, a modular timber construction system that provides a flexible, demountable alternative to conventional linear building methods.

alma-nac Collaborative Architecture – alma-nac’s new Lower School Library for Dulwich College is recognised as a registered LETI Pioneer project, while the Barking Energy Centre stands as a prominent symbol of the borough’s commitment to sustainability.

Prewett Bizley Architects – The submission highlights retrofit projects across three distinct scales — from a decade-long decarbonisation of a modest residential property to a comprehensive retrofit strategy for multiple commercial office buildings. It also features The Orchards, a new-build home in the Somerset countryside, designed and insulated to meet the Passivhaus Standard.
