Place recommends: Cosmos, Memory, Scale at the SOAS Gallery

Cosmos, Memory, Scale marks the inaugural exhibition of the new artist in residence fellowship at the Shapoorji Pallonji Institute of Zoroastrian Studies at SOAS. It presents more than fifteen years of work by Karl Singporewala, an artist and architect whose practice moves seamlessly between these two disciplines.

A defining feature of the exhibition is the variation in scale across its galleries. Many early works are small, intricately crafted, and contained within their own geometric systems, while more recent pieces shift decisively toward the monumental, expressed through boldly coloured timber forms that rise to human height.

As per BD Online, architectural scale figures appear throughout the exhibition, subtly reframing abstract compositions as maquettes for monuments or public artworks. Even the most purely abstract pieces acquire a sense of inhabitable space once a figure is introduced. This device serves as a persistent prompt, encouraging viewers to interpret the work across multiple scales and perspectives.
